What is a fecal egg count test?
A fecal egg count test takes a snap shot of that specific moment in time, it detects eggs of mature parasites that live inside the body of your pet, and pass to the outside via shedding into pets excrament. It is possible that at the time of testing the parasites may be too young to produce eggs, and if no eggs are being shed the infection can not be detected. Eggs in very small numbers may also go undetected and show a negative result, but this is an uncommon scenario.
How to take samples
- For Intestinal worms, 1 sample needs to be collected, for lungworm you should collect 3 samples, which should be taken the same time for 3 days in a row.
- Samples can be taken from any time of the day, but we suggest the sample to be taken from the first stool of the day.
- When collecting lungworm samples, make sure to store the previous days samples somewhere cool, they do not need to be stored in the fridge!
